The Ejura Divisional Council has condemned the violent attack on the Ejura District Police Command, urging for the immediate arrest and prosecution of those responsible for the chaos. The recent violence was sparked by the tragic death of 26-year-old Shaibu Masawudu, who passed away while in police custody. His death, following allegations of phone theft, triggered widespread outrage in the community, leading to the destruction of the police station, vehicles, and private property.
Masawudu, who had been detained for questioning, reportedly complained of stomach pains and vomiting before dying at the Ejura Government Hospital. However, the police allegedly failed to inform his family of his passing. Instead, they transported his body to Mampong for an autopsy, only to abandon it later in the bush, according to the deceased's family. This disregard for the family’s right to information and proper handling of the situation fueled anger among the youth of Ejura, resulting in violent protests that left the police station and surrounding properties in ruins.
In response to the unrest, the Ejura Divisional Council, led by Ejurahene Barimah Osei Hwedie II, has called for the prompt identification and prosecution of the perpetrators. The traditional leaders, together with the Member of Parliament for the area, local Zongo Chiefs, and police officials, convened a meeting to discuss how to prevent further violence and ensure long-term peace in the community.
During the meeting, Ejurahene Barimah Osei Hwedie II voiced concern over the significant property damage and appealed for calm. He urged the community to allow law enforcement to carry out their duties without further disruption. The Ashanti North Regional Police Commander, DCOP Jude Cobina, reassured attendees that over 100 police officers had been deployed to restore order. He promised that all suspects involved in the attack would face justice and called on citizens to respect the law to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The call for peace and justice resonates strongly within the community, with leaders determined to work together to restore stability and ensure that such acts of violence do not repeat.
