Transport Fare Increment Suspended: Concerned Drivers Advocate for Patience Amid Rising Costs

The Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana has decided to halt a planned 15% increase in transport fares, which was initially set to commence on Monday, July 22, 2024. This decision was influenced by the rising costs of fuel and essential spare parts necessary for the transport industry.

The proposed fare hike was met with opposition from the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), which advised commuters to disregard the announcement. David Agboado, the Public Relations Officer of the Concerned Drivers Association, elaborated on the suspension during an interview with Citi Business News. He emphasized that the current economic climate would only exacerbate the financial burdens on the public, prompting the association to reconsider the timing of the fare increase.

"We, the transport operators, have deliberated extensively. While we recognize that the costs of fuel and spare parts have risen, this is not the right moment to increase transport fares. Therefore, we have collectively decided to suspend the fare hike," Agboado explained.

He reassured both drivers and commuters that transport fares would remain unchanged for now. Agboado encouraged his fellow commercial drivers to maintain the current rates until a more suitable time arises for an increment.

"I urge my fellow drivers to be patient. This decision was made in their best interest, and we are committed to acting in their favor. They should not be frustrated; the appropriate time for fare adjustments will come," he said.

This suspension reflects the association’s awareness of the public’s financial challenges and its commitment to easing the burden on commuters while navigating the rising operational costs faced by transport operators.
