As Ghana prepares for its 2024 general elections on December 7th, Bryan Acheampong, Minister of Food and Agriculture, has sparked a crucial debate. He is urging the Electoral Commission (EC) to permit Seventh-Day Adventist (SDA) Church members to participate in Special Voting, aligning with their religious observance that prohibits activities on Saturdays.
Acheampong's plea underscores the need to honor the religious freedoms of over 800,000 Ghanaian SDA adherents who face disenfranchisement due to their Sabbath practices. He emphasizes the importance of respecting diversity and ensuring that every citizen can exercise their democratic right to vote.
"In solidarity with our SDA community, let's advocate for their inclusion in Special Voting alongside security agencies. #SDA Join me in urging the EC to grant this accommodation," Acheampong stated in a recent post.

Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Director of Elections and IT for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), revealed in a Facebook update that efforts to broaden eligibility criteria for Special Voting, including accommodating religious obligations like those of SDAs, were met with legal constraints at IPAC discussions.
"While we aimed to expand voter categories for Special Voting to include religious considerations, the EC cited electoral laws that restricted our proposal for 2024," Dr. Omane Boamah explained.
