Healthy and safety practices to observe in the rainy season


Rainy season is a season enjoyed by almost everyone, especially  pluviophiles (people who loves the sound of rain). Its a time when people get to relax themselves and take some cups of hot coffee with loved ones. In as much as we enjoy the breeze of the rainy season and the splattering of rain on our roofs, it can also bring different health effects, allergies and a lot of accidents and floods if we do not take care. Here are some health and safety tips to help you be safe and healthy in other to really enjoy the drizzling, spitting and downpour of the season.

1. KEEP A RAINCOAT AND UMBRELLA AVAILABLE

During the rainy season, always keep an umbrella in your vehicle or at your place of employment.
Throughout the rainy season, having an umbrella on hand is essential. This behavior will not only prevent you from becoming sick, but it will also help you prevent your valuables, such as your wallet, cards, and phone from getting wet during a rainfall. Buy a raincoat if carrying an umbrella seems cumbersome.
During the rainy season, it's also a good idea to carry your stuff in little plastic cases so that even if you get caught in a downpour, you won't have to worry about water damaging your items in your handbag or backpack.

2. GET RID OF GARBAGES AND STAGNANT WATERS.

Getting rid of stagnant waters is very important in every season. Stagnant waters are capable of breeding mosquitoes which causes malaria, west Nile virus, zika virus, Chikungunya virus, dengue fever etc. Other pests like termites and cockroaches also breed in stagnant waters. 
Garbages are also factors that lead to disease outbreaks. You should always get rid of them or keep them in a place that will prevent it from getting wet. As they may also breed insects and bugs.

3. Get a hot shower.

Take a shower as soon as you are done getting wet, but avoid doing so during a rainstorm. After drying off and dressing, this aids in bringing the body's temperature back to normal, stabilizing the chilly temperature brought on by the rain.

4. AVOID WALKING IN THE RAIN AND STEPPING IN PUDDLES 

It's very unhealthy to step in puddles. One will say the pool of water is clean because it seems to be clear but they actually contain bacteria  which can lead to a lot of fungal infections of the feet and nails.Kids are at a bigger risk of getting this infections because they enjoy stepping and jumping in a rain and puddles. Walking in a downpour is also unhealthy for people with some diseases. Always try and take a hot shower after walking in a rain and puddles.

5. BOOST YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM.

To do this, you have to take vitamins, drink a lot of water and eat a healthy diet.
People are more prone to ailments like the flu, cough, fever and cold during the rainy season because of the severe moisture, for this reason, it is essential to boost your immune system and  take special care of yourself and your family, and take precautions to protect yourself from diseases. You can accomplish this by eating balanced meals and making it a routine to take vitamins or a lot of fruits and also eat your food warm or hot.

6. KEEP YOUR HANDS CLEAN.

It is a good habit to wash your hands often.
The symptoms of a common cold may get worse during the rainy season. Wash your hands frequently, and when you go outside, carry hand sanitizer with you to keep everyone safe. When you get home, make sure to wash your hands and feet, especially if you were outside in a flooded area or the rain.

7. TAKE A HOT SHOWER AFTER WALKING IN A RAIN.

Taking a hot shower after walking through the rain helps you retain your normal body temperature and also gets rid of bacteria which may lead to fungal infections and diseases. 


8. GET AN EMERGENCY KIT.

It is important to prepare and emergency kit ahead of the rainy season. Here are some examples of things you should include in your emergency kit:
  *You can get a torch or lamp which is chargeable or uses battery, because there are a lot of power outages in the rainy season.
* Medicines
*Thermometer
*Mosquito nets and repellants
*Non- perishable food stuffs
*Bandages
*Antibiotics
*Antiseptics
*Towels 

9. DRIVE CAREFULLY

During rainy seasons, there are a lot of accidents and carnage roads. All these happen because a lot of drivers don't take their time when driving in  rainy seasons especially when driving in a rain. Roads get slippery in rainy seasons or whenever it rains which can make your car skid off the road and lead to head-on collisions and other forms of road accidents especially when speeding excessively.

Rainy seasons can be enjoyable and fun, but you should be cautious during this season. Also keep an eye on kids as they are mostly at risk during this season.
