In recent weeks, the surge in fuel prices has reignited discussions about the potential need for an increase in transport fares, particularly among commercial drivers in Accra. Spearheading this call are members of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and other transport unions, who are feeling the pinch of escalating operational costs.
Drivers argue that the recent spike in fuel prices is significantly eating into their profit margins, making it increasingly challenging to sustain their livelihoods and meet their financial obligations. Kwabena Kakraba, a taxi driver at the Adabraka Cooperative Society station, expressed the sentiment shared by many drivers: "We often return home empty-handed because fuel is a non-negotiable expense. To continue operating, we must fill our tanks. However, the rising cost of fuel and other essentials means our earnings are dwindling."
To address this pressing issue, drivers are appealing to union leadership to announce a fare increase. Many suggest a modest 10% hike in fares, believing it would help offset rising operational costs and maintain sustainable livelihoods. Some drivers in areas like Tesano have already taken matters into their own hands, with fares for short distances increasing from GH₵10 to GH₵15.
Kwaku Abban Abaidoo from Tesano highlighted the broader impact on operational costs: "Home used tyres, essential for our vehicles, have surged to GH₵250 each. These escalating costs necessitate a fare adjustment to prevent us from operating at a loss."
While not all stations visited by Citi Business News have uniformly adjusted fares, the sentiment among drivers remains consistent: without fare adjustments, profitability and sustainability are increasingly compromised. Commuters, on the other hand, are voicing concerns about the affordability of transportation, urging stakeholders to consider the impact of fuel price increases on citizens' daily lives.
The Concerned Drivers Union is set to address these escalating concerns on July 8, underscoring the urgency of finding a balanced solution that addresses the needs of both drivers and commuters amidst the economic challenges posed by rising fuel prices.
As discussions unfold and decisions are made, stakeholders across Accra are watching closely, hoping for a resolution that ensures fair compensation for drivers while maintaining accessibility and affordability for commuters.
