Former Ghanaian President John Agyekum Kufuor is calling upon the nation’s youth to seize the opportunity in the upcoming December elections to determine the future leadership of Ghana. During the launch of the Kufuor Scholars Foundation’s voter campaign, aimed at enhancing youth engagement in the upcoming elections, Kufuor stressed the importance of inclusive and effective leadership. "Ghana's population of over 30 million includes a vibrant youth demographic whose educated perspectives and innovative thinking can drive our nation forward," Kufuor stated, underlining the transformative potential of youth involvement in governance.
The call comes amidst concerns over voter apathy, as revealed by a recent survey conducted by the Kufuor Scholars Foundation, which indicated that 43% of Ghanaians are contemplating abstaining from voting in the upcoming elections. Factors contributing to this disillusionment include economic challenges and dissatisfaction with current governance.
To address these issues, the Kufuor Scholars Programme, in collaboration with the National Commission for Civic Education, has launched an extensive voter education campaign. This initiative aims to empower citizens with knowledge about their voting rights and responsibilities, ensuring informed participation in the democratic process.
Reflecting on the demographic advantage of Ghana's youthful population, Kufuor emphasized the potential impact of over 70% youth representation in national decisions.
