86,000 Passports Ready but Remain Uncollected - Osafo Marfo discloses

Have you ever wondered why someone would go through the rigorous process of applying for a passport, only to leave it uncollected? In a surprising revelation by Senior Presidential Advisor Yaw Osafo-Marfo, a staggering 86,000 passports are currently gathering dust at various application centers across Ghana. This includes 19,500 in Greater Accra, 8,696 in Cape Coast, and 8,000 in Takoradi as of June 2024.

During a recent press briefing in Accra, Mr. Osafo-Marfo expressed concern over the financial implications of this situation for the government. Despite subsidizing passport production, which costs about four dollars per passport instead of the usual hundred dollars, these uncollected passports tie up substantial government funds.

"People are eager to obtain passports," Mr. Osafo-Marfo lamented, "but after issuance, they fail to collect them. We need to understand why this is happening."

The National Public Sector Reform Strategy (NPSRS), initiated in August 2018, aims to enhance service delivery across government agencies, including passport offices. Mr. Osafo-Marfo oversees this initiative, which seeks to streamline processes and improve efficiency in public service.

Mr. Paul Kwaw Kudjo, Director at the Passport Head Office, emphasized the importance of avoiding middlemen in the passport acquisition process. He urged applicants facing challenges to directly seek assistance from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ client service unit or from client service units at passport application centers nationwide.

"Simply approach the security personnel at the passport office," Mr. Kwaw Kudjo advised. "They are there to help guide you. Avoid unnecessary intermediaries and seek accurate information and support."

As Ghana continues to implement these reforms, the issue of uncollected passports underscores the need for further investigation into public behavior and bureaucratic processes. Understanding why citizens neglect to collect their passports after applying is crucial for optimizing service delivery and reducing wastage of government resources.

In conclusion, while the NPSRS strives to modernize public services, individual responsibility and streamlined processes are key to ensuring efficient passport issuance and collection. Let's work together to enhance public service delivery for the benefit of all Ghanaians.
