I will create a new city to decentralize Accra's congestion – John Mahama

In a bid to combat the burgeoning congestion choking Accra, John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has unveiled an ambitious plan to embark on a feasibility study for the construction of a brand-new city outside Accra's boundaries. This visionary initiative, articulated during a recent dialogue with the European Union Chamber of Commerce, not only aims to alleviate the strain on Accra but also promises a plethora of economic opportunities for Ghana.

Mahama's proposal envisions the emergence of a new growth pole, poised to catalyze job creation throughout its development and beyond. While affirming Accra's status as the capital, Mahama emphasized the imperative of redistributing governmental functions to the proposed city, effectively decentralizing administrative activities.

The prospective city, spanning across the regions of Greater Accra, Eastern, and Volta, is earmarked to thrive in proximity to the expansive Volta Lake. By strategically situating governmental bodies and financial institutions in this locale, Mahama anticipates a tangible alleviation of Accra's congestion, ushering in a new era of urban sustainability.

Highlighting the strategic significance of this endeavor, Mahama underscored the impending establishment of a port terminal at Mpakadan, poised to streamline cargo transportation to the northern hinterlands. Leveraging the vast expanse of available land, Mahama envisages the relocation of ministries, agencies, and departments to unclog Accra's arteries and foster equitable regional development.

Acknowledging the monumental scope of this undertaking, Mahama delineated a phased implementation plan spanning two decades. With Accra nearing its spatial limits, Mahama's foresight underscores the necessity of proactive urban planning to avert the pitfalls of unchecked congestion. As Mahama aptly articulates, "We need to commence the journey towards this transformative vision, laying the groundwork for future generations to build upon."

In essence, Mahama's proposal transcends immediate alleviation of congestion; it embodies a paradigm shift towards sustainable urban development. By embracing this audacious vision, Ghana charts a course towards a more resilient, inclusive, and prosperous future.
