Driver and Mate Unharmed in Fuel Tanker Fire on Tarkwa-Bogoso Highway

On Friday, a fuel tanker traveling from Tema Express Oil Marketing Company to the Western Region carrying 54,000 liters of diesel caught fire in the town of Ayensukrom No. 2 on the Tarkwa-Bogoso Highway.

When the event happened, the truck, which had the license plate GR-3583-20, was delivering fuel to Hiawa and Aboi Nkwanta.

According to information obtained by the Ghana News Agency (GNA), the driver, Kofi Oppong, and his companion, Emmanuel Offei, were unharmed.

The incident was reported to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) by the Tarkwa Divisional Officer of the Ghana Fire Service (DO) Grade II, Alex Assiem. He stated that on October 6 at around 0959 hours, they received a wireless message informing them that a fuel tanker was on fire at Ayensukrom No. 2.

The truck's driver and his companion were on their way to unload the diesel when they noticed flames under the vehicle as it descended a slope. This caused the brakes to fail.

Although the driver was able to park the truck on the side of the road and exit with a companion to address the issue, the truck quickly caught fire.

Although there were a few tiny leaks on the tanker, the entire front of the vehicle (head) was completely burned.

DO II Assiem claimed that he dispatched some officers to the scene to protect people and property, and that by the time the Prestea fire department arrived, the fire had already been extinguished.

However, the team worked together to cool the bulk to stop it from blowing up. Police officers from Tarkwa and Bogoso were on hand to control the situation and to keep the mob at bay, even though the incident caused traffic to be stopped for approximately an hour.

Residents were urged to maintain their composure by DO II Assiem, who added, "We have cooled down the temperature of the diesel in the truck, and no explosion will occur."

In order to ensure their personal safety, he encouraged the general population to avoid places where explosions are taking place in the future.
