Women's coach in Rwanda is suspended after calling the Black Queens "men"

Grace Nyinawumuntu, the head coach of Rwanda's women's football team, has been suspended by the Rwandan football federation (FERWAFA) as a result of her controversial remarks on Ghana's national women's team.

Following her team's 7-0 defeat to Ghana in a Women's Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier last Wednesday in Kigali, Nyinawumuntu made some comments. She asserted that the Ghanaian players "looked like men," and she blamed intimidation for her team's loss.

In response, Nyinawumuntu's suspension was announced by FERWAFA on Twitter and was effective "until further notice." Her "inappropriate choice of diction" was mentioned, and it was emphasized that her remarks were against both football rules and Rwandan values.

“The remarks made by the coach of the national women about the players of the Ghana national women’s team are in violation of the rules and values of football in Rwanda. We remind members of Ferwafa to desist from behaviour and remarks that are not aligned with the truth, have no factual basis and are not professional.”

At Kigali Pele Stadium, the first leg of the 2024 Women's Africa Cup of Nations qualifier (WAFCON) saw Ghana's Black Queens defeat Rwanda with a score of 7-0. With goals from players like Doris Boaduwaa, Evelyn Badu, Priscilla Adubea, and others, the Black Queens controlled the match.

The loss was Rwanda's coach's fifth game after two losses and two draws in her first four games.

In order to fulfill their goal of competing in the (WAFCON) for the first time in their history, the She-Amavubi will play the rematch at the Accra Sports Stadium on Tuesday, September 26, 2023.
