The Twedie District court in the Atwima kwanwoma district has sentenced two friends to 32 months in prison each after they were successful in deceiving numerous people under the pretense of recruiting them in the Ghana Armed Forces.
Foster Gyimah, a 30-year-old excavator operator, and Richard Boateng, a 22-year-old student, were accused of conspiring to commit fraud and to pose as public officials when they were not.
Despite their plea of innocence, they were found guilty and sentenced to jail after the trial. Four prosecution witnesses were called by the police, and their testimony supported the investigator's findings and the case's facts, leading to the defendants' conviction.
The complainant, Simon Kwame Bonsu, was a merchant and a pastor in Pankrono, close to Kumasi, where the convicts also lived, according to the facts as they were laid out in the case by Police Chief Inspector Attah Kwabena Migyikra before the court presided over by Anthony Asaah.
In 2021, Gyimah addressed himself to the complaint as an army captain and offered to assist seven people in joining the Ghanaian army.
Gyimah sought GHc5,000.00 from each of the complainant's three relatives after the complainant expressed interest and referred them to him. According to the prosecution, the complainant gave Gyimah a total payment of GH 27,000.00.
Gyimah also succeeded in obtaining GH27,400.00 from the complainant and introduced Boateng to the victims as the person in charge of the recruiting. After receiving the money, the two fled, and the Suntreso police were notified of the incident.
In October 2022, the police detained the prisoners from their hiding place in Obuasi, and after an inquiry, they were charged with the crime.
