One dead at Taifa Timber Market as traders, land guards violently clash over eviction

There have reportedly been violent clashes at Taifa Junction between landguards and traders over plans to evict the Muus Timber Market (also known as the Ofankor Timber Market). According to numerous stories, the conflict between the two groups started when the original landowner, Naa Sackey, tried to evict the traders by hiring land guards. The traders use the property as their market.

One of the traders admitted during a phone interview with UTV that there had once been a legal dispute over the property, but that they had been on good terms up until a few months ago after the landowner had won the case. He claimed that she started acting quickly to evict them from the property while they had no problem with her.

The trader said that the landlady had summoned armed land guards to the property without warning on the morning of Wednesday, September 20, 2023, causing a violent altercation that resulted in one person's death.

"The land on which we work used to be under litigation but the woman who owns it won it and together, we all had a good working relationship but a few months ago, after she took her rent from us, she has been making moves to evict us.

"There was a lot of confusion even though there are a lot of people with receipts that show that they have a business with the woman and so if she needs to evict them, it should not be immediate. So, she brought some land guards who shot guns and killed someone, leading to anger among the people. As I speak with you now, thanks to the IGP, he has dispatched some senior policemen here who have been able to restore order here," the trader he explained.

He stated that there are now roughly 3000 occupants of the property, and they were shocked that the landlady would send these land guards to forcibly remove them.

Although numerous sources indicate that at least one person has been confirmed killed and three others have sustained injuries, there has not yet been an official statement from the police as of the time this story was finished.
