Why you should urinate on time

Do you remember when you went to urinate and had to wait for someone to come out of the washroom before easing yourself?  Almost everyone holds his or her urine for reasons that differ from person to person. It may be because there is no washroom available,or the washroom is occupied. Some maybe feeling lazy to get up and do it so they keep procrastinating. You maybe wondering if it's ok to hold your urine. Holding your urine typically isn't harmful if your urinary system is in good shape. Adults who have a bladder capacity of more than 2 cups may begin to experience discomfort.

Holding your urination can be a crucial component of bladder training if you have an overactive bladder. You might be able to create a more convenient pee schedule if you regularly train your bladder.

The maximum amount of time you can safely retain your urination is not regulated. It differs depending on the individual. Retaining urine for any length of time might be risky in some situations. Holding your urine can raise your risk of infection or kidney disease if you have conditions such as, renal disorders, enlarged prostate, neurogenic bladder, urinary retention and  urinary tract infections (UTIs) already pose a greater danger to pregnant women. Holding your urination when pregnant can significantly raise this risk.

It's not as straightforward as your bladder filling up with liquid when you have the urge to empty it. It's actually a pretty complicated process where a lot of different muscles, organs, and nerves collaborate to alert you when it's time to leave. The nerves in your bladder become active when it is roughly half full. Your brain receives the urge to urinate from these nerves. The bladder is then told by the brain to wait until it's time. When you hold your urine, you actively resist the urge to urinate. Each individual will respond differently to these signals. Additionally, they differ based on your age, how much liquid is in your bladder, and the time of day.

Effects of holding your urine for long

Here are some of the effects of holding your urine for long.

* The urethra, the tube that carries urine from the bladder when it empties, is contaminated with bacteria that can be removed by urinating. Holding it back too long gives germs time to grow and infect the bladder, which can result in an infection.

* The typical one-way mechanism of urine flow from the kidneys into the bladder can become compromised when we hold our urine by tightening a muscle against a stretched bladder. Infection risk can rise as a result, and long-term renal and bladder problems may result.

* Holding urine can cause the bladder to become too stretched and cause voiding dysfunction, which is a loss of coordination between the urethra and the bladder muscle. An overactive bladder and urine leaks may occur from this.

What to do if there is a need to hold your urine

When you have to urinate, urinate. You ought to go to the restroom if you can.

Here are some activities you can do to divert your attention from the urge to urinate, if a bladder training has been recommended for you or if you don't have access to a bathroom:

*Be sure to stay warm because being cold can make you feel the need to urinate.

* Play a game, read a book or solve a crossword puzzle, or perform another task that actively engages your brain.

*If you are already seated, continue to do so.
