In a devastating incident along the Bolgatanga-Tamale highway, eight travelers were killed when gunmen established roadblocks near Gbimsi, close to Walewale, and opened fire indiscriminately.
On Sunday, armed assailants halted vehicles in both Gbimsi and Walewale, targeting individuals through brutal interrogations. This harrowing encounter ended with eight fatalities and the destruction of two vehicles by fire, intensifying security concerns in the region.
A survivor shared a chilling account: “I was on my way from Sunyani to Paga. When I reached Walewale, roadblocks were set up, and people were being searched for execution. The ordeal lasted over an hour without any intervention from security forces.”
This attack is thought to be linked to the ongoing Bawku Conflict, which has reignited after a brief period of calm.
In response, the Ghana Police Service has pledged to enhance security along the highway in the days ahead. Their statement outlined efforts to stabilize the security situation in Bawku and its surroundings, with increased police and military presence along the Bolgatanga-Walewale-Tamale route to protect travelers and manage traffic.
The police reassured the public of their commitment to restoring peace and security in Bawku and nearby areas, emphasizing their determination to uphold law and order amidst escalating tensions.
