The Latin term "precari" (which meaning fervently seeking, imploring, or entreating) is the source of the English word "prayer." A person may engage in a religious act or practice known as prayer in which they communicate with a worship object in order to ask for assistance, inspiration, protection, etc.
Another function of prayer is to express gratitude to a deity. Not just in Christianity, but in many other cultures and religions as well, praying is an essential aspect of worship. All religions engage in some form of prayer, but they do so in different ways or through different means.
While praying, individuals or religious organizations may engage in various rites or acts. Some men bow their heads in prayer. Muslims traditionally kneel and bow in various directions as part of their prayer rituals. Others are sobbing while they are on the ground. with a ton more. However, it is uncommon for Christians to see someone praying with their eyes closed.
Prayer plays a significant role in our worship. Jesus discussed the value of prayer throughout the Gospel Books in a variety of ways.
In Luke 18, Christ used a parable to illustrate the need for men to pray and never give up. Paul discussed the value of prayer in 1 Thessalonians chapter 5 verses 16–18(16 Always be joyful. 17 Never stop praying. 18 Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus)while writing to the Thessalonians. The Bible does not instruct us to close our eyes when praying. Jesus only imparted a prayer-related lesson in Matthew 6:5-6; And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 6 But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
Here are the reasons why you should close your eyes when praying
1. To prevent distractions while we pray.
The primary reason we close our eyes during prayer is to try to remove ourselves from our environment and any other outside distractions to ensure that we can focus on our prayers.
There are many things that will eventually interrupt us or try to divert our attention from them anywhere we pray, whether it be in our private closet or a public gathering, and the only way we can stop them and focus on our prayer is to close our eyes while praying to ensure that we can focus on God while praying.
2. To be still and to concentrate on God.
In order to fully focus on God as we pray, we want to do it with a calm and quiet mind. As we pray, we also meditate and make an effort to hear from God. Additionally, it is not likely if we have a lot on our minds. In order to concentrate on God, unwind our minds, and fix our emotions on him, we close our eyes.
3.To Establish a Spiritual Connection with God
Our eyes are closed when we pray, which allows us to enter the spiritual realm. It's similar to trying to engage in some form of meditation that enables people to transcend the outside physical world. Since God is a spiritual being, closing our eyes while prayer makes us feel more connected to him.
This enables communication between the spirit of God and our spirit. Naturally, God's spirit is connected to our spirit even when our eyes are open, but when we pray, we communicate with God more and develop our relationship with Him.
4. To keep the mind from becoming lost.
Closing our eyes prevents our hearts from straying during prayers because the mind tends to wander easily.
Even though it is not a mandate or regulation, closing our eyes when praying is essential if we are to be successful. Additionally, we can sit, stand, kneel, or recline on the ground while praying while keeping our eyes closed.
However, these are not the matters that really matter. The most crucial aspect of praying is to do so with an open mind and a sincere spirit. Having faith that God will hear our requests while also being ready to do so. And take note: Make it a habit to pray without ceasing because it is God's will.
