After a 24-carat gold-plated gun was discovered in a US woman's luggage in Australia, the woman was taken into custody.
The woman, who has not been named, traveled from Los Angeles to Sydney and didn't have a license for the gun, according to the Australian Border Force (ABF). She might spend as much as 10 years in prison.
The woman's suitcase was scanned at the airport, and the pistol was discovered there, according to pictures supplied by the ABF. The weapon was captured in a second image after the bag was unzipped.
An ABF representative said in a statement that cutting-edge detection equipment had assisted in preventing a hazardous weapon from entering the nation.
"Time and time again, we have seen just how effective ABF officers are at targeting and stopping illegal, and highly dangerous, goods from crossing Australia's border," said ABF Commander Justin Bathurst.
According to officials, the 28-year-old woman was charged, showed up in court on Monday, and was granted bail.
When unloaded and secured in a hard-sided case, guns can be checked by airline passengers on domestic US flights. Additionally, before checking in, passengers must inform airline staff that they want to bring a weapon with them.
However, a record amount of guns were seized from US airport travellers in 2022. The transportation security administration (TSA) reported that as of mid-December, 6,301 weapons had been taken at checkpoints.
Australia, on the other hand, has some of the strictest gun prohibitions in the whole world. They were put into place as a result of the 1996 shooting deaths of 35 persons in Tasmania.
Following the incident, all automatic and semi-automatic weapons were banned, and a required government buyback program resulted in the surrender of about 600,000 guns.
